Scouting for Food:
Each year Pack 637 participates in a local food drive supporting needy families in the Arlington/Washington DC area. Food is collected at a local center, sorted, and distributed to food banks in the area as determined by need. Pack 637 targets the neighborhoods withing approximately 1 mile of Tuckahoe Elementary. We execute in 2 phases over 2 separate weeks.
Notification. Territories are assigned by den, and Scouts walk door to door on a weekend to post flyers on homes on their designated route, notifying residents of the food pickup the following week.
Pickup. Scouts will walk their designated routes again, and pick up food at the front doors of any homes that participate. A parent will follow in a vehicle to carry food while scouts walk the rest of their route.
This service project meets 3 objectives:
Exercise. Scouts will walk between 2 - 5 miles each day, depending on the age group of the den.
Orienteering. Dens are encouraged to print out maps, and allow Scouts to navigate the route, identifying street names and cardinal directions
Service. Scouts are connecting to their community, and reminded of the privileges and responsibilities we have toward others.
